Best AI Receptionist for a Home Service Business in Ontario: Seven Tests to Run
By Right On Call ·
The best AI receptionist for an Ontario home service business is the one that ends the call with a job in the calendar or field-service tool you already run, sorts an emergency from routine work the same way every time, reads back a Canadian postal code, answers in French when the caller does, prices in Canadian dollars, and tells you plainly what it will not do. We are one of the vendors, and we know of no independent ranking of Ontario vendors we can cite, so treat this as a checklist rather than a verdict. Run the seven tests below on everyone you are weighing, us included.
1. Does it finish the call, or take a message?
A message still needs someone to call back before anything is scheduled. Ask what a call ends as. Ours ends as a booking in your calendar, a job in Jobber, or a text to your on-call number with the caller’s name, number, and reason. The full split between the two kinds of service is on AI receptionist vs answering service.
2. Does it connect to what you already run?
Ask which tools it writes into today, and which ones it would need built. Cal.com and Calendly connect from our dashboard. Jobber connects from the dashboard on every plan with no adapter fee (OAuth, then a client and a job for each call, no technician assigned), and it is not a Jobber App Marketplace listing.
Housecall Pro only opens its API on its MAX plan, which Housecall Pro bills you for, and we set the adapter up with you on request: one adapter is included on the Managed plan and a build beyond that is quoted separately. ServiceTitan is scoped per account and quoted before we start: one adapter is included on the Managed plan and a build beyond that is priced separately.
3. How does it decide what is an emergency?
Ask for the rule. Ours uses three levels: safety, urgent, and standard. Gas, smoke, sparks, or a burning smell get a fixed safety message and a flag for an immediate callback from a person. An active leak, no heat in cold weather, or spoiling food is urgent and gets the soonest slot your calendar has, plus a text to your on-call number. The rest books normally. How it works is in burst pipe or dripping tap.
4. Does it handle Canadian details?
Ask a vendor to take a test call with a Canadian postal code and read it back. Ours reads it back and checks it against your service area before it books. Ask whether it answers in French. Ours continues in French when the caller starts in French; this website is English only.
Ask whether your carrier can forward to it. Bell, Rogers, Telus and the other Ontario carriers each handle no-answer forwarding differently, and the call forwarding page says what each one states.
5. What will it refuse to do?
The answer you want is a list. Ours does not diagnose a fault, quote a repair price, offer a time your calendar did not return, or cancel or move an existing appointment on its own (a reschedule books the new visit and texts you to cancel the old one). The full list is on what the receptionist cannot do.
6. What does it cost, in Canadian dollars?
Get setup, monthly price, included minutes, and the overage rate in writing, in the currency you pay. Ours: Essential is $199 CAD a month with 200 minutes and $699 CAD setup, then $0.70 CAD a minute. Managed is $449 CAD a month with $1,299 CAD setup. Prices are plus HST. Several competitors price in US dollars only; answering service pricing in 2026 lists the published prices we found, with the date we checked.
7. What can it show you before you sign?
Ask for a test call on your own setup and for the call record afterwards. Ask what it has run on. Our first live customer is an appliance repair shop in London, Ontario. No HVAC, plumbing, or electrical shop has taken a call on Right On Call yet, so for those trades we build and test your setup with you before it answers real customers.
When we are not the pick
In Canada we serve Ontario only. If you want to sign up and configure it yourself tonight, we are done-for-you, not self-serve. If you want a person on every call, a staffed answering service fits better, and we say so on the comparison page.
Write each vendor’s answers to the seven tests side by side and pick the one with the fewest gaps for how your calls actually run. The free missed-call audit uses your own call log to show how many calls would have been answered before you decide.
