Why Right On Call Is the Best Option for a Plumbing Company in Ontario
By Right On Call ·
We think Right On Call is the best option for an Ontario plumbing company because a burst pipe does not leave a voicemail, and the product is built around that call. It separates water that is actively spreading from a dripping tap, confirms the address is in your area, texts your on-call plumber while the caller is still on the line, and asks the caller for a photo of the problem. It does not walk anyone through a repair or quote a price. One thing to know first: no plumbing shop has taken a call on Right On Call yet. Our first live customer is an appliance repair shop in London, Ontario, so for plumbing we build and test your setup with you before it answers a real customer. This is our case as one of the vendors, not an independent ranking.
It tells spreading water from a dripping tap
The first question is where the water is and whether it is still coming. Water actively leaking or spreading, a burst or frozen pipe, sewage backing up, no water to the house and a leaking water heater are urgent on a typical list. A dripping tap, a running toilet, a fixture install and a slow drain that is not backing up book as routine. You write the list with us at setup, and the same answer gets the same outcome every time. Burst pipe or dripping tap walks through it.
Urgent goes to a phone, not an inbox
Anything you mark urgent is texted to your on-call number while the caller is still on the line, with the address, what is happening and a callback number. The caller is told someone will call back shortly. Dispatch stays yours: it does not assign a specific plumber on your board. What lands on your on-call phone shows what the text contains.
You see the problem before you drive
When a routine visit books, the caller gets a text asking for a photo or short video. When they reply, it is stored on the job and forwarded to your on-call phone, with a short read of what the picture shows. That read describes the picture, can be wrong, and never says what the repair costs. Treat it as a head start.
It keeps trucks out of the wrong postal codes
The address and postal code are read back to the caller and checked against the areas you cover. A job outside them is refused in code at booking, not just discouraged in a prompt, so a truck is not sent across the county for a dripping tap. If the caller hangs up before giving an address, a recovery text goes out, and if they reply the receptionist can book a time by text.
It books routine work against real times
Routine visits go onto an opening your Cal.com or Calendly calendar returned, or into Jobber as a client and a job. The time is checked again before booking so one slot is not promised twice. Jobber connects from the dashboard on every plan with no adapter fee (OAuth, then a client and a job for each call, no technician assigned), and it is not a Jobber App Marketplace listing. Housecall Pro only opens its API on its MAX plan, which Housecall Pro bills you for, and we set the adapter up with you on request: one adapter is included on the Managed plan and a build beyond that is quoted separately.
Essential is $199 CAD a month with 200 minutes included and $699 CAD setup, then $0.70 CAD a minute billed to the second, plus HST. A frozen-pipe week costs the extra minutes, not a move to a bigger plan.
What it will not do
It does not walk a caller through a repair or tell them how to shut off the water. It does not quote a price for the job, and the only fee it states is your service-call fee. It does not book an address outside your coverage, and it does not take a card number over the phone. On a gas smell, smoke or sparking the normal call stops, a fixed safety message is read and the call is flagged for an immediate callback from a person. Choosing an AI answering service for a plumbing shop has six questions to put to any vendor.
What is proven and what is not
Proven: the appliance line it runs on today, which uses the same triage, postal-code check, calendar booking, on-call texting and photo request a plumbing setup would. Not proven: a plumbing shop on live calls. We have no plumbing results to quote, and the cost figures on our plumbing page are planning numbers. Before your line goes live we write your urgency rules with you and run test calls on a private line.
When we are not the pick
In Canada we serve Ontario only, and we are done-for-you rather than self-serve. If you want a person to pick up every call and dispatch a named plumber, a staffed answering service fits better. AI receptionist vs answering service sets out the split.
The test that matters is a burst pipe at 2 AM. Ask any vendor, us included, to take that call on a private line and show you what the on-call phone received and how long it took. The free missed-call audit uses your own call log to show how many urgent calls rang out last month.
